3 Wood Loft and Distance: Understanding Tee and Fairway Performance

A 3 wood commonly has 15° of loft, but stronger and higher-lofted versions differ. PING’s G430 MAX and TaylorMade’s SIM2 Max 3 woods are 15°, while the SIM2 Max D is 16°. Your useful distance depends on the shot you produce, including whether you play from a tee or the fairway.

Keep those two roles separate. A 3 wood that gives you a dependable tee shot may be harder to launch from turf. One distance figure can hide that difference, making it difficult to judge where the club fits in your bag.

What loft is a 3 wood?

Check the exact generation and model suffix. A club labelled 3 wood is not guaranteed to have the same loft or build as another 3 wood, even within one brand.

The examples below show standard, stronger and higher-lofted options. They are published manufacturer specifications for the selected builds, rather than measurements of individual second-hand clubs. Each model name links to its source.

ModelPublished loftStandard length
PING G430 MAX 3W15°43 in
TaylorMade SIM2 Max 315°43.25 in
TaylorMade SIM2 Max D 316°43.25 in
TaylorMade SIM2 Ti Rocket 313.5°43.25 in
Callaway Rogue ST MAX 3HL16.5°43.25 in

TaylorMade’s figures refer to the standard builds in its 2021 component catalogue, rather than the separate women’s builds. The Rocket example is the SIM2 Ti model, not a SIM2 Max.

The table shows why a model suffix matters. It does not establish which club will be longest, easiest to launch or most accurate for you. A used club may also have an altered shaft or playing length.

Standard, strong and higher-lofted versions

Our team distinguishes these options when helping buyers compare 3 woods. A stronger loft may be considered for a different flight or longer tee-shot role. A higher-lofted version may be worth trying when launch is a concern.

Neither is a guarantee. Lower stated loft does not automatically produce longer carry, and a high-launch label does not establish the flight you will achieve. Head design, shaft, settings and your contact all belong in the comparison.

Choose the version around the shot you need. Handicap alone cannot tell you whether a strong or higher-lofted 3 wood is suitable, and a draw-biased head does not remove the need to understand your directional miss.

How far should your 3 wood go?

There is no single distance every golfer should reach. Establish what you can carry from each lie, how consistent those shots are and where they finish. A required number based on age or handicap cannot answer those questions.

Our team asks how often you play, which courses you use, how frequently you reach for the 3 wood and what distances the surrounding clubs cover. Previous experience with fairway woods also helps establish the role you need.

A longest strike shows what happened once. It does not establish the carry you can rely on for a long approach or the landing area you should choose from a tee.

Carry versus total distance

Carry is the airborne part of the shot. Trackman’s carry definition uses a landing point at the same elevation as impact, so an uphill or downhill landing area needs a separate allowance.

Total includes where the ball finishes after landing. Trackman calculates total using assumptions about surface hardness and a flat landing area. That figure is different from observing a ball’s actual finish on your course.

Keep the measures separate. A running shot may cover useful ground, but a total-distance figure cannot show whether you can carry a bunker. Check whether supplied numbers are carry, calculated total or an observed outdoor finish.

Why tee and fairway performance can differ

A tee lets you raise the ball above the turf. From the fairway, the ball’s position relative to the ground is set by the lie. That changes the contact task, even when the club and target stay the same.

Strike location and delivery can change the flight. Trackman defines dynamic loft as the loft presented by the face at impact, which can be affected by delivery, shaft bending and where the ball meets the face.

If you produce better contact from a tee, the club may launch more dependably there. If contact from turf is inconsistent, the same head can give you a much wider spread of carries. There is no fixed yardage penalty for playing from the ground.

Roll-out also depends on how the ball lands and the ground conditions. A long run from firm turf does not prove you created more carry. It is not evidence that the ball was compressed against the ground; ball compression occurs through contact with the clubface.

For the technique, the task is to establish suitable contact with the lie you have. This guide focuses on interpreting the result. Repeated heavy, thin or topped shots need a closer look at setup and delivery, rather than a distance assumption.

Compare tee and turf results separately

Use the same 3 wood and setting for the comparison. Keep the balls and conditions comparable, note the surface and wind, and identify any launch-monitor normalisation. Start with a suitable fairway lie rather than mixing in difficult recovery shots.

Use these checks to interpret the two roles. They are comparison prompts, not measured NNGC results.

CheckFrom a teeFrom suitable fairway turf
CarryDoes normal carry fit the intended landing area?Does it repeatedly cover the approach carry required?
ContactWhere does the ball meet the face?Does contact remain useful without a tee?
DirectionHow wide is the usual shot pattern?Where do good and poor strikes finish?
Flight and finishDoes the flight suit the tee-shot task?Does the landing behaviour suit the approach?
RoleDoes it add an option beyond driver?Does it improve the long-approach options?

Keep ordinary mishits in the comparison. Our team looks at good and poor strikes because a club’s usefulness depends partly on what happens when contact moves away from the centre.

Avoid combining tee and turf into one unexplained average. It could make an unreliable approach club look dependable because its better tee shots lift the overall figure.

Read distance alongside reliability

A useful 3 wood needs to deliver the shot often enough to help your decisions. Consider carry spread and direction alongside the best result. A club that occasionally reaches a green but frequently leaves trouble short may not be the right approach option.

When both roles work

If the 3 wood provides dependable tee shots and useful approaches, check its distance alongside driver and the next shorter club. It earns its place by covering shots you need, rather than meeting a traditional bag arrangement.

When only the tee role works

A tee-only role can still be useful when the club provides a distinct landing distance, flight or shot pattern that helps on your courses. Compare that benefit with the space it takes and the alternative clubs you could carry.

It is not automatically a more accurate driver substitute. Check your own results with both clubs. If it duplicates the driver’s useful shots and offers little elsewhere, another option may contribute more.

When turf contact remains unreliable

Persistent difficulty from straightforward fairway lies is a reason to investigate contact and fit. Buying a lower-lofted version does not resolve the cause by itself.

Our team may suggest comparing more loft or another club type when the 3 wood is uncomfortable or fails to help the intended shot. A lesson can assess delivery, while a fitting can test the actual head and shaft combination.

What if your 3 wood and 5 wood overlap?

Confirm that the numbers describe the same lie and measurement first. Then compare contact, launch and playable finish. A 3 wood does not have to carry farther simply because its number is lower.

If a 5 wood provides similar usable carry with more dependable approach results, that may support a change. If each supplies a distinct useful shot, there may be a reason to keep both. The choice needs your evidence, rather than a fixed gap rule.

Check a used 3 wood before choosing

Once you have defined the tee or fairway role, compare the individual listing with the original model specification:

  • Exact model and suffix: distinguish standard, Rocket, HL and other versions where offered.
  • Loft and current setting: confirm the marked loft and hosel position if adjustable.
  • Handedness: match the club and any adjustment instructions to the hand you play.
  • Actual shaft and length: check the shaft model, weight, flex and any build alterations.
  • Condition: inspect photographs of the individual face, crown, sole, hosel, shaft and grip alongside its grade.

For adjustable models, use that exact manufacturer’s manual. PING’s G430 MAX specification confirms loft adjustability, but that does not mean every 3 wood uses the same sleeve or settings.

Browse our used 3 woods once you know the role and build you want. If the comparison points towards another option, explore the wider used fairway woods range.

Frequently asked questions

Does lower 3-wood loft always mean more distance?

No. Useful carry depends on launch, contact and delivery as well as the build. Compare results before choosing a stronger loft.

Should a 3 wood go a fixed distance shorter than driver?

No. Compare your own shots from the same situation. The difference depends on both clubs, your contact and whether you are measuring carry or total.

Is a 3 wood only for good players?

No. Different builds offer options to try, but suitability depends on the shots you can repeat. A different club or coaching may be more useful if the 3 wood does not serve your game.

Must a 3 wood work from both tee and fairway?

Both roles can add value, but a distinct tee-shot role may justify carrying one. Decide whether its contribution is more useful than the alternative club it would replace.
