Is a 5 Wood Right for You?

A 5 wood makes sense when it gives you a reliable shot or distance that the clubs around it do not already cover.

It can be a strong option if you want more launch from the fairway than a 3 wood, more carry and height than a long iron or hybrid, or a controlled alternative from the tee.

The important question is not whether a 5 wood belongs in a traditional set. It is whether the club creates a useful gap and a shot you can repeat.

Where Should a 5 Wood Sit in Your Bag?

Think about the clubs immediately above and below it.

Driver or 3 wood → 5 wood → 7 wood, hybrid or long iron

Compare normal carry rather than your longest strike with each club.

If your 3 wood carries only slightly further but is much harder to launch from the ground, a 5 wood may be the more useful club. If your 5 wood and 7 wood produce almost the same carry, you may not need both.
