How to choose the right second hand driver

Drivers vary in launch, spin, forgiveness, and feel. The right one is the one that suits your eye the best, giving you confidence at address and matching your swing speed to the head shape. Use the below driver buying guide to narrow your options quickly, then refine with filters.

By skill level

Beginner

Get the ball up easily and more drives in play. Look for higher loft, larger heads, and models known for forgiveness. Miss-hits will be less punished due to the larger heads and larger moment of inertia, giving you more stability on impact with the ball.

If you’re new to golf, look for a used driver that is forgiving, easy to launch and in good condition. For most beginners, that usually means a driver with around 10.5° to 12° of loft, as extra loft helps get the ball in the air more easily.

Shaft flex matters too. Regular flex suits many new golfers, while senior or light flex can help if you have a slower, smoother swing. Stiff shafts are usually better for faster swings and can be harder for beginners to control.

A forgiving driver usually has a larger head, a wider sweet spot and some adjustability, rather than being a low-spin tour model built for stronger players.

Mid handicappers

Balance distance with control. You will benefit from forgiving heads, but can start to choose models that suit your preferred ball flight and shape.

Distance focus

Maximise carry and roll if you strike it well. Lower spin heads and stronger lofts reduce excess height and help you gain those extra yards out of faster swings. These types of driver are suited for the better player.

For distance, look for a driver that gives you the right balance of launch, spin and ball speed. Faster swingers may benefit from lower-spin heads and stronger shafts, while many mid-handicap golfers will get more real-world distance from a forgiving driver that keeps mishits in play.

A second hand low-spin driver can be a great buy for stronger ball strikers, but it is not always the longest option for every golfer. If a driver launches too low or spins too little, you may lose carry distance even if the model is known for speed.

What driver loft should I choose?

Loft drives launch height and forgiveness. More loft adds height and reduces side spin. Less loft lowers flight and can increase roll.

• 10.5° to 12°
  Easier launch, more forgiveness, helps reduce slices and keep drives straighter. Good starting point for most players.
• 9° to 10.5° Lower flight with more roll. Works best if you generate enough speed and strike the centre regularly. Link to specific clubs here

Many modern drivers have adjustable loft sleeves. A 10.5° head can often be tuned up or down slightly to fine-tune launch.

For most golfers, driver loft sits somewhere between 9° and 12°. If you swing it quickly and already get the ball up in the air, a lower loft such as 9° or 9.5° may work well.

If you want a bit more help with launch, carry and forgiveness, 10.5° or 12° is often the better place to start. As a simple rule, if your drives come out low or drop out of the air too quickly, more loft is usually your friend.

What shaft flex do I need in a driver?

Shaft flex affects timing, strike quality, and dispersion. The right flex helps you square the face more consistently.

• Regular Suits smoother swings 84-96mph. Helps launch the ball higher and keeps strikes consistent.
• Stiff Suits faster swings between 97-104 mph. Keeps flight tighter and reduces excess spin.

If your drives fly low and right, the shaft may be too stiff. If they feel loose or high with little control, it may be too soft.

Shaft flex is mainly about matching the club to the speed and rhythm of your swing. Regular flex works for a lot of everyday golfers, stiff flex tends to suit more aggressive and faster swing speeds, and senior or light flex can help if you swing more smoothly or need help launching the ball.

Head design: what to look for

Drivers are built with different weight positions and face designs. This changes how forgiving they are and how the ball launches.

• Forgiving heads Larger profiles with weight pushed to the back. Help on off-centre strikes and launch the ball higher.
• Lower spin heads Weight moved forward. Reduce spin and can increase distance for faster swinging players, but are less forgiving.

Every used golf driver is individually inspected on arrival and graded using a 10 to 5 scale across the head, shaft, and grip. We grade conservatively, so the condition shown is what you receive. We do not sell drivers below 5 out of 10.

• Mint (9 to 10 out of 10) Minimal or no use
  • Face: little to no strike marks
  • Crown: clean with no visible wear
  • Shaft and grip: close to new with minimal handling marks
    Often hit only a few balls, or not used at all
• Very Good (8 out 10) Light use, very clean overall
  • Face: light strike marks from limited rounds
  • Crown: small surface marks only on close inspection
  • Shaft and grip: very good condition with faint signs of use
    Used a handful of times, well looked after
• Good (6 to 7 out of 10) Regular use, fully playable
  • Face: visible wear from normal play
  • Crown: may show light sky marks or cosmetic wear

We inspect each part of the driver separately before grading. Any club below a playable standard is not listed, and grips are replaced where needed. Photos reflect the actual club wherever possible, so you can see exactly what you are buying.

Light scratches, sole wear and small cosmetic marks usually do not affect how a driver performs. They are common on used golf drivers and are mainly visual. A sky mark on the crown may affect appearance, but it does not normally change distance or forgiveness.

Dents, cracks, loose heads or shaft damage are more serious. Those can affect performance and should be avoided. Always check the photos and condition notes before buying.
