A 3 wood gives you a long option from the tee or fairway, but the right choice depends on how easily you launch it, where you plan to use it and the distance gap it needs to fill. You can also browse our wider range of used fairway woods.Benefits of a Used 3 Wood
Premium clubs for less
Buying second hand can put premium 3 woods within reach for considerably less than their original retail price. That gives you more budget to focus on the loft, shaft and head design that suit your game.
A controlled option from the tee
A 3 wood has more loft and a shorter shaft than a driver. For many golfers, that can make it easier to find the middle of the face when accuracy matters more than maximum distance.
Maximum fairway wood distance
The lower loft gives a 3 wood the most distance potential among common fairway woods, provided you generate enough speed and launch.
Clear condition grading
Every used 3 wood is checked and graded before listing, so you can compare specification, condition and price before choosing.
How It Works
Every used 3 wood listed on Nearly New Golf Clubs is inspected before it goes live on the website. That means you can browse with a clearer view of condition, specification and price before choosing the club that suits your game.
Checked before listing
Each 3 wood is reviewed before being uploaded to the website. The head, face, crown, sole, shaft and grip are checked so the listing reflects the club’s condition as clearly as possible. Adjustable sleeves and weights are also checked where fitted.
Clear condition grading
We grade every used 3 wood so you know what to expect before you buy. Whether a club is mint, very good or good, the aim is to make condition easy to understand before it reaches your bag.

Browse by brand, loft, shaft flex, condition, handedness and price. You can compare different 3 woods based on how you plan to use the club, whether that is mainly from the tee, the fairway or both.

Used 3 Wood Buying Guide
Is a 3 Wood Right for You?
A 3 wood earns its place in the bag when it gives you a useful shot or distance that your other clubs cannot provide.
It can be a strong choice if you:
- Want a shorter, more controlled alternative to driver from the tee
- Strike fairway woods confidently from the ground
- Need a long club between your driver and 5 wood, hybrid or long iron
- Generate enough launch from around 15° of loft
A 5 wood may suit you better if your 3 wood regularly launches too low, is difficult to strike from the turf or carries little further than your higher-lofted fairway wood.
The aim is not to carry a 3 wood because it is a traditional part of the set. It should solve a clear distance or shot requirement.
Choose Your 3 Wood by How You Will Use It
Mostly from the tee
Look for a head that gives you confidence behind the ball. A slightly deeper face and lower loft can suit golfers looking for a flatter, powerful alternative to driver.
Strong 3 woods around 13.5° usually require enough speed to launch properly.
Mostly from the fairway
Launch becomes more important.
A shallower face can sit more comfortably behind the ball from tight turf, while extra loft and forgiving rear weighting can make it easier to produce useful carry.
From both tee and fairway
Around 15° is the traditional middle ground.
Look for a versatile head shape that gives you enough launch from the turf without sacrificing confidence from a tee. Adjustable models can give you more scope to fine-tune loft and flight.
Make Sure It Fills a Useful Distance Gap
Your 3 wood should sit naturally between the clubs around it.
Think about:
Driver → 3 wood → 5 wood or hybrid
Compare your normal carry distances rather than the longest shot you have hit with each club.
If your 3 wood and 5 wood travel almost the same distance because you struggle to launch the 3 wood, carrying both may add little value.
If the 3 wood creates a clear gap and gives you a shot you trust from the tee or fairway, it is doing its job.
What Loft Should You Choose?
13° to 14°
Often described as a strong 3 wood. Best suited to golfers who generate plenty of speed or expect to use the club mainly from the tee.
Around 15°
The standard 3 wood loft and a good starting point for most golfers considering one.
It balances potential distance with enough loft to make fairway use practical.
16° to 16.5°
Often found in higher-launch 3 woods or 4 woods.
The extra loft can produce more useful carry for golfers who struggle to get a standard 3 wood airborne.
More loft can sometimes produce more distance from the turf if it creates a better launch rather than a low-running flight.
Deep Face or Shallow Face?
A deeper face provides more vertical hitting area and can inspire confidence when the club is used from a tee.
A shallower face positions the centre of the face closer to the ground, which can make clean contact easier from a fairway lie.
Neither is automatically better. Choose based on where you expect to use the club most.
Forgiveness and Head Design
Weight positioned further back in the head increases stability when contact moves away from the centre.
That can help golfers who want more consistency from the fairway or on less-than-perfect strikes.
More compact or forward-weighted heads can reduce spin and produce a flatter flight, but they generally demand better contact.
For most golfers, a few extra yards from a perfect strike are less useful than a club that produces a repeatable result.
Which Shaft Flex and Weight Do You Need?
Fairway wood shafts are usually shorter than driver shafts and can be heavier to improve control.
Choose a shaft that allows you to launch the club without losing stability.
A shaft that is too stiff or heavy can make a low-lofted 3 wood harder to launch. A shaft that is too soft can make face delivery and dispersion less predictable.
Do not look at flex alone. Shaft weight and profile also affect how the club feels and performs.
3 Wood vs Other Clubs
3 Wood or 5 Wood?
Choose a 3 wood if you can launch it consistently and need its lower flight or extra distance potential.
Choose a 5 wood if easier launch, carry and consistency from the turf matter more.
For some golfers, the 5 wood will carry as far as the 3 wood because the extra loft produces a better flight.
3 Wood or Mini Driver?
Choose a 3 wood when fairway use matters.
A mini driver has a larger, deeper head and is designed primarily as an alternative to driver from the tee.
If you rarely expect to hit the club from the ground, a mini driver may suit that role better.
3 Wood or Hybrid?
A 3 wood offers more potential distance and a flatter flight.
A hybrid is shorter, higher lofted and generally easier to strike from a wider range of lies.
Choose based on the gap you need to fill rather than the club name.
How to Test Your Used 3 Wood
Your 30 day return period gives you time to find out whether the club performs the job you bought it for.
Do not judge it from one perfect shot.
Check:
- Carry distance: Does it create a useful gap between the clubs around it?
- Fairway launch: Can you get enough height from a normal lie?
- Tee dispersion: Does it give you the control you wanted compared with driver?
- Strike consistency: Are you finding the middle of the face often enough?
- Ball flight: Is the flight useful for the courses and conditions you normally play?
- Confidence: Do you trust the club when the shot calls for it?
If the 3 wood does not give you a repeatable shot that your existing clubs cannot provide, a different loft, head design or club type may suit you better. If you need help narrowing it down, book an online golf club consultation.
Condition Guide
Every used 3 wood is individually checked and graded so you know what to expect before you buy.
Mint condition
Mint condition 3 woods show minimal signs of use. They may have been hit only a few times, if at all.
Faces: little to no visible strike wear
Soles: clean with minimal marks
Crowns: clean with little to no visible marking
Shafts and grips: close to new condition
Very good condition
Very good condition 3 woods show light use but remain clean overall.
Faces: light strike marks
Soles: small marks from limited play
Crowns: minor cosmetic marks may be visible
Shafts and grips: very good condition with light signs of use
Good condition
Good condition 3 woods show normal signs of play but remain fully usable.
Faces and soles: visible wear from regular use
Crowns: may show small cosmetic marks or light sky marks
Shafts: possible light bag wear
Grips: usable or replaced where needed
Cosmetic wear does not stop a 3 wood performing. A well-graded second hand 3 wood can still deliver strong launch, distance and control when the specification suits your game.
