How to choose the right iron set

Most iron sets look similar. They are not. The right set helps you launch the ball consistently, control distance, and hit more greens. Start with forgiveness, set make-up, and shaft. Refine from there.

Focus on key elements like shaft material and flex, set composition (whether that be 4–PW, 5-SW, or whatever suits your set), loft gapping, and condition. At NNGC, we provide detailed and consistent expert grading on every set to make choosing simple and risk-free.

By skill level

Start with your strike and ball flight. Choose forgiveness if you miss often, or more compact heads if you want control.

1. Beginner Struggle to get the ball airborne or tend to slice? Choose larger heads with wider soles and more loft to help launch the ball higher and keep misses straighter.
2. Mid handicappers Inconsistent strike and distance gaps between clubs. Choose a balanced set that offers forgiveness on mishits but still gives control over distance and direction.
3. Low handicappers  Strike the ball consistently and want control over flight and shape. Choose compact heads with less offset for lower, more precise ball flight.

Set make-up: what you actually need

Iron sets are sold in combinations like 4–PW or 5–SW. This affects how easy the set is to hit and how well it covers distances.

• 5–PW
  Covers key distances without including harder-to-hit long irons. Most reliable option for consistency.
• 5–SW
  Adds short game coverage. Fewer gaps inside 100 yards, with less need for extra wedges if your set already includes a sand wedge. Browse our second hand wedge sets here too.
• 4–PW or longer sets
  Includes long irons that require faster swing speed and consistent strike. Not suited to most players.

If you are unsure, choose 5–PW or 5–SW. If you find longer irons are difficult to launch, compare our second hand fairway woods or golf hybrids for more height, carry and forgiveness from the tee or fairway.

Shaft type and flex

Shaft choice affects how the club feels and how consistently you strike the ball.

• Steel shafts
  Heavier and more stable. Help keep ball flight lower and dispersion tighter.
• Graphite shafts
  Lighter and easier to swing. Help generate speed and launch, especially if you struggle with height and descent angle.
• Regular flex
  Helps create height and smoother timing. Best for moderate swing speeds.
• Stiff flex
  Reduces excess movement through impact. Best for faster swings and stronger strikes.
• X-Stiff
  X stiff suits the better player with a faster iron swing and who wants maximum control and precise ball flight.

If your shots fly too low or feel hard to control, shaft is often the cause.

Forgiveness vs Control

This is the biggest difference between iron sets.

• Game improvement irons
  Larger heads, wider soles, more offset. Help launch the ball higher and reduce distance loss on off-centre strikes.
• Players irons
  Smaller heads, thinner soles, less offset. Give more control over flight and spin, but punish mishits more.

If you want more consistent results, choose forgiveness. If you want shot control, choose precision.

What affects performance?

• Head size
  Larger heads keep ball speed higher on mishits. Smaller heads demand centre strikes.
• Weight placement
  Low and back weighting helps get the ball up. More compact weighting lowers flight and spin.
• Face design
  Modern faces flex more to maintain distance across the face. Older sets lose more distance on off-centre strikes.

Sole design: how it interacts with the ground

• Wider sole
  Stops the club digging. Helps you strike the ball cleaner from rough or softer ground.
• Narrow sole
  Cuts through turf more easily. Better for precise contact and shaping shots.

Real club examples, what’s the difference?

• TaylorMade Stealth
  Easy to launch, strong ball speed, and forgiving across the face. Suits players who need help with height and consistency.
• TaylorMade RSi 2
  Balanced performance. Maintains distance on off-centre strikes while still offering control.
• Callaway Big Bertha (2004)
  Large head and wide sole make it easy to get airborne. Very forgiving and stable on mishits.

Quick decision guide

• If the ball flies low or struggles to get airborne
  Choose irons with lofts around 27° to 31° for a 7 iron and a wider sole. Avoid strong-lofted sets below 27° unless you have speed.
• If you miss the centre often
  Choose game improvement irons with larger heads (cavity back), wider soles (20–25mm+), and perimeter weighting to keep ball speed and direction more consistent.
• If your shots go too high or lack control
  Choose more compact irons with 7 iron lofts around 32° to 35°, thinner soles, and less offset for a lower, more controlled flight.
• If you struggle with distance gaps between clubs
  Choose a standard set like 5–PW or 5–SW with consistent loft gaps of 3° to 5° between irons.

If you’re not sure what to choose
Start with a forgiving set: 7 iron loft around 28° to 30°, regular flex shaft, 5–PW set make-up. Adjust once you see your ball flight.

Condition guide: what you will actually receive

Every iron set is individually inspected on arrival and graded using a 10 to 5 scale across the head, shaft, and grip. Each set is matched for consistent condition across all clubs. We grade conservatively, so what you see is what you receive. We do not sell below 5 out of 10.

• Mint (9 to 10 out of 10) Minimal or no use across the full set
  • Face: little to no strike marks across irons
  • Heads: clean toplines and soles with no visible wear
  • Shafts and grips: close to new with minimal handling marks
    Often hit only a few balls, or not used at all
• Very Good (8 out 10) Light, even use across the iron set
  • Face: light strike marks from a few rounds
  • Heads: small surface marks on soles or toplines only on close inspection
  • Shafts and grips: very good condition with faint signs of use
     Clean, well looked after set with consistent condition across all clubs
• Good (6 to 7 out of 10) Regular use, fully playable
  • Face: visible strike wear across irons
  • Heads: sole wear and light bag marks, may show minor cosmetic wear
  • Shafts: light bag wear or small marks
  • Grips: still usable or replaced if needed
    Wear is consistent across the set and does not affect performance
