At £479.99, our Apex CB 24 4–PW set offers a compact players’ design with Dynamic Gold X100 extra-stiff shafts. It is half an inch longer than standard, with 6/10 heads and 7/10 shafts and grips. This is a different fit from DCB, aimed at golfers comfortable with a smaller head and a heavier, firmer shaft.

Mavrik Max and Apex DCB: help with inconsistent contact

If your strike moves between the middle, heel and toe, start with a forgiving head design. Mavrik Max is built around easier launch and forgiveness. Apex DCB combines a forged body with a deep cavity and wider sole, helping golfers who want Apex feel with more assistance through the turf.

Compare how far your ordinary mishits carry. A set that keeps more of those shots near your intended distance may be more useful than one that produces a longer best shot.

Elyte HL: more height on approach shots

HL means high launch. Elyte HL uses more loft and a face design intended to increase launch, helping the ball land more steeply.

It is worth trying if your approaches struggle to stay airborne or run through the green. Available builds vary, so compare shaft weight and flex alongside the head. A senior-flex graphite package will feel different from the regular steel example in our budget guide.

X-Forged and Apex CB: a smaller head for confident strikers

These models suit golfers who prefer a compact shape and want control over flight and shot shape. They offer less help on a poor strike than larger game-improvement designs.

The fitted shaft matters here. Our X-Forged example has stiff Project X shafts, while the Apex CB example has extra-stiff Dynamic Gold X100 shafts. Choose a build you can swing comfortably throughout a round.

Ai200 and Ai300: distance help or a larger forgiving profile

Apex Ai200 uses a hollow-body construction in a players’ distance shape. Ai300 has a larger cavity-back profile aimed at golfers who want more forgiveness. Both sit within our used Apex iron range, subject to stock.

Ai200 is worth considering if you prefer a relatively compact appearance but still want ball-speed assistance. Ai300 is a more relevant starting point if a larger head gives you confidence and your contact varies.

• Elyte HL: judge height, carry and how quickly the ball stops on the green.
• X-Forged or Apex CB: compare direction and distance control, including the shots you do not catch cleanly.
• Your longest iron: hit it alongside your hybrid or fairway wood to check that each gives you a useful distance.
