Is a 48 Degree Wedge a Pitching Wedge or Gap Wedge?

It can be either. In a traditionally lofted iron set, a pitching wedge can sit around 46 to 48 degrees. In that setup, a 48 degree club may be the pitching wedge itself.

Modern iron sets can use much stronger pitching-wedge lofts. If your pitching wedge is around 42 to 44 degrees, a 48 degree wedge may instead perform the job of a gap or approach wedge.

The name matters less than the distance it needs to cover.

What Is a 48 Degree Wedge Used For?

A 48 degree wedge is primarily a scoring club for full and partial approach shots.
