How do I choose the right golf shaft flex?
Shaft flex is about matching the club to your swing speed, tempo and delivery.
Regular flex suits many everyday golfers, stiff flex often suits faster or more aggressive swings, and senior or light flex can help golfers with slower swing speeds launch the ball more easily.
If you are replacing a shaft, try to match what already works in your current clubs unless you have a clear reason to change.
-
What golf shaft weight should I choose?
Shaft weight affects how the club feels, how easy it is to swing, and sometimes how you deliver the clubhead.
Lighter shafts can help create speed and launch, while heavier shafts can feel more stable and controlled.
As a simple guide, match the weight range you already get on with, especially if you are replacing one shaft in a set or trying to keep a familiar feel.
-
Should I choose a steel or graphite golf shaft?
Steel shafts are usually heavier and are common in irons and wedges. Graphite shafts are often lighter and are common in drivers, fairway woods and hybrids, as well as irons for golfers who want an easier swing feel.
Heavier graphite shafts are also available, so compare the actual weight and flex rather than choosing by material alone.
The best choice depends on the club, your swing and what feels manageable through a full round.
-
How do I measure shaft length before buying a replacement?
Check whether the listing gives the length of the shaft itself or the playing length of the complete club once fitted.
For a loose shaft, measure from end to end and check whether the seller’s measurement includes the grip or adapter.
“Raw length” means the shaft’s length before trimming, so it may not describe a used shaft that has already been cut. If you are matching an existing shaft, compare measurements taken in the same way.
-
How do I check whether a replacement shaft and its adapter will fit my clubhead?
Check the brand, exact clubhead model and adapter type carefully before buying.
Driver, fairway wood and hybrid adapters are often brand-specific and can vary between club types or generations, so matching the brand alone is not enough.
Confirm that the adapter fits your particular head, and check the shaft’s tip size if you are buying one without an adapter. If the listing does not make compatibility clear, ask before ordering.
-
What does shaft torque mean, and does it matter when choosing a shaft?
Shaft torque describes how much a shaft twists under a turning force and is usually listed in degrees. Lower torque shafts can feel firmer, while higher torque shafts can feel softer, but neither is automatically better.
It can matter, but for most golfers it should sit behind the basics: flex, weight, launch profile, length, adapter compatibility and whether the shaft suits the club you are building.
-
Can I replace a golf shaft myself, or do I need a club fitter?
If the replacement shaft already has the correct adapter fitted for your adjustable clubhead, you may be able to swap it yourself using the manufacturer’s adjustment wrench and instructions.
Removing bonded heads, fitting adapters, trimming shafts and setting length need more tools and experience, so these jobs are usually best handled by a qualified club builder.
If you are unsure, get help so the club is built securely and to the right specification.
-
Is it safe to buy a used golf shaft online?
Yes, buying a used golf shaft online can be a cost-effective way to replace, test or upgrade a club, provided the details match what you need. At Nearly New Golf Clubs, our used shafts are inspected by experts before listing.
Check the shaft model, flex, weight, length, tip size, adapter, grip and condition before ordering. Compatibility is particularly important with shafts, so ask us if any of the details are unclear.
-
What condition will my used golf shaft be in?
The condition will depend on the individual shaft. Check the listing photos and description for surface marks and the condition of any fitted grip or adapter.
Light cosmetic marks may not affect performance, but cracks, splits or bends are signs of damage rather than normal cosmetic wear. If you are unsure about a mark or need a closer view, ask our team before ordering.
-
Can I return a used golf shaft if it is unsuitable or incompatible?
If a used golf shaft is unsuitable or incompatible, contact our team to confirm the return options and next steps.
Check the return conditions before fitting, trimming or otherwise altering the shaft. Because compatibility is so specific, it is worth checking the adapter, tip size, length and flex against your club before buying.
