What Wedges Should I Carry?

Start with the pitching wedge already in your bag. Add clubs that cover missing approach distances and the shots you face around the green.

Two example four-wedge setups are:

• 46° pitching wedge, 50°, 54° and 58°: four-degree loft gaps throughout.
• 48° pitching wedge, 52°, 56° and 60°: another evenly spaced starting point.

These examples depend on pitching wedge loft. A stronger-lofted pitching wedge may need a different first gap wedge.

You may need fewer clubs if a gap wedge and sand wedge cover your approach distances, bunkers and greenside shots. Add a lob wedge when it gives you a useful shot you cannot comfortably play with the others.

What Is the Difference Between a Gap, Sand and Lob Wedge?

These are common ranges, not fixed definitions. Bounce, grind and technique also affect what each wedge can do. A lob wedge can work from sand, while a gap wedge can be useful for lower chips with more rollout.

How Do I Choose Wedge Loft?

Check the loft of your pitching wedge and any approach or gap wedge included with your irons. If you are replacing your irons too, choose your used iron set before finalising the wedges.

Around four to six degrees between wedges is a useful starting point. Then measure carry distances. Equal loft gaps do not guarantee equal distance gaps, particularly when you mix an iron-set wedge with specialist wedges.

Compare several normal strikes with each club. Look for a repeatable distance between them, rather than basing the setup on your longest shot.

What Is Bounce on a Golf Wedge?

Bounce describes the angle that helps the sole support the club and resist digging into the ground or sand. It works alongside sole width and shape.

• Low bounce: often around 4° to 6°. Can suit firm turf, compact sand and a shallow delivery that takes little divot.
• Mid bounce: often around 7° to 10°. A starting point for mixed conditions and a more neutral delivery.
• High bounce: generally above 10°. Can help on soft turf, in fluffy sand and with a steeper delivery that takes deeper divots.

What Is Wedge Grind?

Grind is the shaping or removal of material from the wedge’s sole. It changes how the club sits behind the ball and moves through the ground.

• Heel relief removes material near the shaft side of the sole. It can help you open the face while keeping the leading edge closer to the ground.
• Trailing-edge relief removes material from the back of the sole and can reduce the sole area contacting the turf.
• A wider, fuller sole provides more support and can help resist digging, particularly in softer conditions.

Choose around your usual shots. Full approaches with a square face place different demands on the sole from open-face pitches and bunker shots. Grind letters are not a universal fitting system, so check the design for the specific model. Vokey’s grind guide.

Which Shaft Should I Choose?

Compare shaft model, weight, flex and club length with your existing wedges. For fuller approaches, a setup that blends with your scoring irons can make the transition between clubs feel more comfortable.

A heavier wedge shaft is not automatically better. Check how easily you control the club on shorter swings, especially if your irons use lightweight steel or graphite shafts. “Wedge flex” does not identify one standard weight or stiffness across every manufacturer.

Should I Buy Individual Wedges or a Wedge Set?

Buy an individual wedge when one distance or shot is missing from your bag. A set is worth comparing when you want to replace several wedges together.

Matching models and shafts can help create a consistent feel, but matching logos do not guarantee useful gapping. Check the condition of each face, the loft sequence and whether the bounce options suit each club’s job.

How Long Do Golf Wedges Last?

There is no fixed lifespan. Frequency of play, practice volume, bunker use and playing conditions all affect face and groove wear.

Clean the face before judging it. A worn strike area and reduced stopping control on comparable, well-struck shots are reasons to assess the wedge. Extra rollout alone does not prove the grooves are worn, because the ball, lie and green conditions also influence the result.

How to Test Your Used Golf Wedge

• Distance gaps: Record several comfortable full and three-quarter shots. Does the wedge give you a useful carry distance between your other clubs?

• Turf interaction: Test fairway lies and rough. Does the sole move through the ground without repeatedly digging or bouncing into the ball?
• Bunker performance: If you bought it for sand, try the bunker conditions you normally face. Can you clear the lip and control where the ball lands?
• Partial shots: Compare half swings, shorter pitches and chips. Can you repeat the flight and distance without forcing the shot?
• Confidence: Can you choose a landing spot and commit to the swing? Does the wedge earn a clear role in your bag?

Test from grass and sand where possible. Mats alone will not show how the sole behaves on the course. If the club does not suit you, follow the return instructions within the 30 day period. Return postage is the buyer’s responsibility.
