Yes. A 58 degree wedge sits within the normal lob-wedge loft range.

The slightly lower loft compared with a 60 degree wedge also means a 58 can take on a wider range of approach and short-game shots.

What Is a 58 Degree Wedge Used For?

A 58 degree wedge can be used for:

Do You Need a 58 Degree Wedge?

A 58 degree wedge makes most sense when it gives you a high-lofted shot that the clubs below it cannot provide comfortably.
Look first at your highest existing wedge.
If you already carry a 54 degree wedge, adding a 58 can create a natural four-degree step:
50° gap wedge → 54° sand wedge → 58° lob wedge
If your highest wedge is 56 degrees, the two-degree gap into 58 may be too small unless the clubs have clearly different short-game roles.
You also do not automatically need a 60 above a 58. For many golfers, 58 degrees provides enough loft to be the final wedge in the bag.

How Does a 50, 54 and 58 Degree Wedge Setup Work?

This is one of the most straightforward ways to build the specialist end of the bag.
50° can handle fuller gap-wedge approaches and lower pitches.

Can You Use a 58 Degree Wedge From Sand?

Yes.
A 58 degree wedge can work well from bunkers, particularly when you need a higher exit or have less green available after the ball lands.
Bounce and sole design are important.
A higher-bounce 58 can provide more help through soft sand, while lower-bounce options may suit firmer bunkers or shallower technique.
For standard bunker shots, some golfers will still find a 54 or 56 degree wedge easier because the lower loft provides more forward movement.

How Far Should a 58 Degree Wedge Go?

There is no standard distance every golfer should hit a 58 degree wedge.
Carry depends on swing speed, strike, shaft, head design and the length of swing you use.
At this loft, repeatable partial distances can be more useful than trying to maximise a full swing.
Measure how far the wedge carries with your normal:
