What Is a Sand Wedge?

A sand wedge is a high-lofted scoring club designed to work from bunkers as well as turf, rough and around the green.
The defining feature is not simply the loft. Sand wedges normally combine a relatively high loft with enough bounce and sole width to help the club move through softer ground and sand.
That makes them useful for much more than bunker shots.
A sand wedge can become your main club for pitches, chips and shorter approaches when you want more height than a gap wedge without moving to the specialist loft of a lob wedge.

What Degree Is a Sand Wedge?

Most modern sand wedges sit around 54 to 56 degrees.
A 54 degree wedge is at the stronger end of the sand-wedge range. It generally travels slightly further and fits naturally into a 50, 54 and 58 degree setup.
A 56 degree wedge is the traditional sand-wedge loft. It provides slightly more height and commonly sits within a 52, 56 and 60 degree setup.
Some wedges outside that range can still be used effectively from sand, particularly when the bounce and sole design suit the conditions.

Is a Sand Iron the Same as a Sand Wedge?

Yes.
“Sand iron” is an older name for the club now usually called a sand wedge.
You may still see the term used on older clubs or when golfers refer to wedges supplied as part of an iron set.
The same buying considerations apply: check the loft, bounce, sole design, shaft and condition rather than relying only on the name stamped on the club.

54 or 56 Degree Sand Wedge?

Both can perform the sand-wedge role.
Choose 54 degrees when:

• You already carry a 50 degree gap wedge
• You want slightly more distance on approaches
• You plan to carry a 58 degree wedge above it
• You want the sand wedge to handle more full and three-quarter shots

Choose 56 degrees when:

• Your gap wedge is around 52 degrees

The two-degree difference is not the only factor. A 54 degree wedge with higher bounce can behave very differently from a low-bounce 56.

What Makes a Sand Wedge Good From Bunkers?

Three parts of the club work together: loft, bounce and sole shape.
Loft helps the ball launch high enough to clear the bunker lip.
Bounce keeps the leading edge from digging too deeply into the sand.
Sole width provides surface area underneath the club and can help it move through softer sand.
A golfer who plays from soft bunkers or enters the sand steeply may benefit from more bounce or a wider sole.
Firm, shallow bunkers and a shallower technique may suit less bounce.
The best sand wedge is therefore not simply the club with the most loft.

Do You Need a Sand Wedge?

For most golfers, a sand wedge is one of the more useful specialist wedges to carry because it can handle several jobs.
It makes particular sense if your current setup lacks:

A lob wedge normally:

Add a lob wedge when you regularly need more height than the sand wedge comfortably provides.

How Far Should a Sand Wedge Go?

There is no standard sand-wedge distance.
Carry depends on the loft, swing speed, strike, shaft, head construction and the length of swing you make.
A 54 degree sand wedge will normally travel further than a comparable 56 degree wedge, but your own carry numbers matter more than generic yardages.
Measure your:

• Full swing
• Three-quarter swing
• Half swing

Then compare them with the gap wedge below and any lob wedge above.
The sand wedge should give you useful scoring distances without overlapping heavily with another club.

Can You Chip With a Sand Wedge?

Yes.
A sand wedge can be used for chips when you need more height and less rollout than a gap or pitching wedge.
You do not need to use it for every greenside shot.
If there is plenty of green between the ball and hole, a lower-lofted wedge can often produce a simpler shot with more predictable rollout.

What Makes a Sand Wedge Forgiving?

A forgiving sand wedge helps prevent small strike errors from becoming large mistakes.
